There are many things that can slow down a PC other than Malware.ĭownloading and running Hijackthis and then posting the log would at least help us to see if you have any suspicious processes running on the PC. We cannot advise in this forum on Malware removal but you can get expert help in the Malware forum by opening a new thread. If you would answer my earlier question to observe processes using any high level of CPU or Memory in the Task Manager we may be able to help you find the cause. Īvoid any registry scanners that promise to speed up your computer, they can cause more harm than good.

I am currently downloading some malware removal software from (the good ones) and i'll see what they can do.īefore you download any anti virus, anti spyware, or similar scanners install this first so you can be sure the site you are using is trustworthy. However, my laptop is an Acer TravelMate 290. But when I try to use other programs, such as Firefox, Aciid, Vegas, ect, especially when connected to the internet, my whole computer starts going crazy, and it seems the more I use it the longer it takes for me to - At the moment my laptop's going way to slow for me to do another run performance so I can't look at the checkmarks at the moment since they're not loading up. It plays very well ethen especially when i'm watching DVDs on my computer. I'll try to perform a chkdsk once I resolve this - I think this is also the case, because my compuer works fine at the start up, if not connected to the internet. Also report back with the CPU and memory use when the machine is idle.įirst i'll start going through your posts in - I performed a chkdsk, but at 80% my laptop suddenly shut off and went into some sort of hibernation mode, as it does when i leave some programs running for a period of time, my dad says he thinks my laptop does this to save power. Report back with the name of the process if this is the case.

If it is running at a high level look to see what process in the list is showing high memory or CPU usage. Mamaluigi, one thing you could check is the memory and CPU usage in Task Manager. The only other thing likely to cause a sudden slow down is a Malware infection but the hardware needs to be tested first to eliminate this from the possible causes. Therefore, the most likely cause is going to be due to hardware problems which is why I first suggested a disk check on the hard drive, next will be a memory test. A sudden degradation in system performance is only likely to be caused by excessive memory use if a lot of new startup programs had just been installed, which is not the case. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!Īda101, your theory is a good one but as the OP has stated in the opening post there are only a few items of software running on the PC so they are unlikely to be using much of the memory. When I used to watch DVDs on this laptop it wasn't slow then, but now it seems to be really slow, especially when i'm connected to the internet! It's also shuts down very quickly, I don't understand why it shuts down so quickly but takes forever to do anything when it's on.

Some people suggest that the laptop is using the hard drive as it's system instead of something else but I don't know how to change this. I originally thought I fixed the slowness by unplugging the charger for it but the slowness eventually came back. I have done several virus scans but they haven't picked up anything. I have tried uninstalling some programs but this is no help. I don't have very much programs installed onto this computer, but the programs I have are Sony Vegas, Sony Acid, Google Earth, Mozilla Firefox, MSN, and Itunes.

Today, for example, it's took me over 20 minutes to start up, use, and to open Mozilla Firefox and MSN. When I start up my laptop, it will run quickly to start up, but when I am on it everything becomes really slow. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes to start up, when other times it takes around 40 minutes to do something. My dad gave me one of his old laptops around a month ago, it used work well until a few days later when I noticed that it was going incredibly slow, it started to lag constantly and it would just load forever, and nothing would happen.
